Sunday 1st April 2012 – Walking ***** sunny and warm

Top night in the van even if did hear late night party goers from Les Orres hooting at us on the way down the mountain!!! Lovely relaxing start to the day, using the van as a bird hide we see a Great spotted woodpecker and a nuthatch + our second red squirrel. Then it was hair wash day and van tidy too and have breakfast at our own wooden picnic table surrounded by snowy peaks in clear blue skies and warm:) We then drive down a short way to a small Hamlet and see a sign for some mega walks but are not up to the 2/3 hour walk up the snowy path to some out of the way chapel but instead enjoy a 2 hour scramble up a mountain stream, I did manage to slip over and get a wet bum!!! Then up some steep paths into the woods covered in ice in places – sandals not my best choice of footwear :( We saw loads of gold finches and a lovely yellow bird possibly a siskin??? Then back to the van and we head into Embrun, the wind has got up strong again in the afternoon and is blowing dust from the huge dried up river bed up the valley :( After quickly checking out the town we head down to a small man made Lac for lunch and it great to watch the locals enjoying their Sunday picnicking and playing football etc. There is even a couple of windsurfers enjoying the breeze in a tiny area of Lac at the end!!! We then set off to walk around the Lac which takes about an hour, we met a nice English family who own a house here and had a chat and then return to the van parked under a lovely line of trees for coffee and cake, Mag has hers in the van while I walk over to the water to read, while laying in the sun in the afternoon at the small Lac in Embrun with kites soaring above had a moment to think how lucky we are to have this lifestyle and are loving every minute :) A big thank you to George (Mags dad) for helping us achieve it!!! Also thought about my Mum, Mabel - Mags mum and Pam Mags step mum all sadly gone and missing you all :(
At about 6:30 with most of the locals heading home we drive to the end of the Lac next to the River Durance although the water is miles away to park up for the night. We have another hour walk up the dried up river with gold finches everywhere with the sun setting over the mountains – then home for a tin of chilli and a boil in the bag rice – top meal :) The only downside of the whole day was another electrical failure when the wire to our ac/dc adapter used for charging our laptop broke :( so that’s another shopping trip tomorrow!!!
